The dangerous mineral was often present in boilers, incinerators, insulating materials and other elements of ships.
This put those in various shipyard occupations at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases. Adhesives were used to install and repair a variety of products, such as pipes, boilers and furnaces.
These products had to hold up in the harsh conditions of their environment. Manufacturers added asbestos to these products to strengthen them and extend their lifetime. People who worked with or near these adhesives were likely exposed to asbestos. It was common for members of the U. Asbestos was used in most shipyards and aboard most Navy vessels from the s to the s.
This likely exposure puts Navy veterans at an increased risk of malignant mesothelioma cancer. People who constructed or maintained battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines during this time were likely exposed to asbestos.
These people often worked in space-constrained and poorly ventilated areas, which possibly allowed more asbestos fibers to remain in the areas. For example, enginemen and machinists faced asbestos exposure. Enginemen and machinists worked in engine rooms that were often laden with asbestos. The asbestos was contained in and around engine piping, insulation, adhesives and gaskets.
Working in and around these items put these workers at a high risk of asbestos exposure. In addition to shipyard operations, ordnance manufacturing and storage was another key mission at MINS for nearly the same time period--including those used prior to the Civil War.
Naval operations ceased and the facility was decommissioned on April 1, The planned reuse for the base consists of primarily industrial and commercial uses and also residential housing. The reuse would also include community uses such as a public golf course and regional park.
