Now that you know the basics of the game, here are a few terms that will make you sound like a washer toss expert. Skip to content. Washers — As the name suggests, the main hardware you need to play washer toss is a piece of hardware itself. Usually metal or plastic, washers are thin, disk-shaped plates that have a hole in the middle. The size varies, but game pieces are typically two to two-and-a-half inches in diameter with a one inch hole in the middle.
Most games use four washers per team — although some variations use three — for a total of eight. Targets — There are a few different types of targets that can be used to create the field of play in washer toss. The two most common are washer boards and washer boxes. A washer board is a slanted board that can vary in dimension with a hole cut in the middle — think a cornhole board with a smaller hole. Here are a couple areas to focus on to help you become a washer toss boss: The Throw — Using an underhand motion or pitch is best for most people.
For superior tossing accuracy, have the washer rest on your middle finger with your index finger curled around the edge. Let your thumb rest gently on top. This will help you get the washer to spin off your index finger at a trajectory parallel to the ground. The Stance — Like batters in baseball, different stances work best for different people. Some players find it helpful to take a step forward with their legs apart, while others keep their feet planted together in an anchored position.
With two or more players or teams, and one reaching 11 points before the other scores, the game is finished. Should one player or team score 17 points while the opponent has scored only 1 point, the game is called a whitewash and the player or team with only one point is out of competition.
In competition with 2 or more players or teams, it is possible to whitewash some but not all contestants. In a mens match, when one player or team reaches 21 or more points before the opponent reaches 20 points, the game has gone full term and the player or team with 21 or more points is the winner. When a player or team reaches 20 points before the competition, they have achieved my add or their add and reverts to last in the throwing order. Set the other box down so the centers of the cups are 25 ft 7.
Avoid playing on a hard surface since the washers may bounce when they land. Divide the players into 2 teams. If you have 4 players, split the group up into 2 teams consisting of 2 players each.
You and your teammate will alternate rounds when you throw washers. Take 1 set of colored washers for you and your teammate. Toss a washer as close to the cup as you can to determine the starting player. Toss the washer towards the opposite box so it lands close to the cup. Have each player toss a washer at the box before checking whose is the closest.
Part 2. Stand on one side of the box. Pick either the left or right side of the box and stand there. Have your opponent stand on the other side of the box.
Hold the washer between your index finger and your thumb. Wrap your index finger around the front edge of your washer and support the back side with your thumb. Curl your other fingers so the washer rests on top of them while you hold it. Aim toward the cup on the other side of the field as you wind up. Throw the washer at hip level as you step forward.
Swing your arm forward until the washer is in front of you at hip level. Let go of the washer so it flies parallel to the ground. Watch where your washer lands to see if it scores and so you know where to pick it up when the round is finished. Continue throwing the rest of your washers. Readjust your aim and power to get as close to the cup as you can. Some games are only played with 2 washers per player, but others may play with 3 or 4. Part 3. Check how many washers landed inside the cup and box.
Walk over to the box you were throwing at and locate the washers. Every washer that lands inside of the cup counts as 3 points while every washer inside the box counts as 1 point. When a washer is flat along the top edges of the box, then it counts as an automatic win. Compare how many of your washers are in the cup compared to your opponent.
